Checkers Championship Boerewors 2021

Published 2 days ago5 min read
The new vintage boerewors has just been released!

When: Sunday evening, 3 October 2021

Thick and thin wors (both 2021) was bought fresh from Checkers Dorp Street, Stellenbosch, earlier that day. Wors is made on site at the in-store butchery (again: note to self - compare wors from different stores?)

Presentation was sighted and evaluated after braaiing. Comments are mine.

Ingredients

(see also the labels on the image for more detail)
  • 2021 beef 73%, pork 17%, water 4%

(for comparison:
2020: beef 56.7%, pork 34%, water 4.6%
2019: beef 69.6%, pork 17.4%, lamb 5.8%, water 3.5%)

Appearance

  • thick: after braaiing - juicier than the thin wors
  • thin: after braaiing - slightly less juicy

Aroma

  • some coriander, mild boerewors character, with strong white pepper and beef fat character, (similar to the 2020)

Flavour

  • medium-spiced, quite mild (similar to the 2020), the thinner wors seemed to have a bit more flavour

Basic tastes

  • balanced, quite salty (similar to 2020)

Mouthfeel

  • quite juicy, otherwise similar to 2020

General comments

I found the 2021 sausage quite similar to how I remember the 2020, but possibly slightly more juicy. The types of meat (beef, pork) in the 2020 and 2021 winners are similar, but there is almost a third more beef and half the pork in the 2021. The thin wors seemed to have more flavour, possibly because of the greater surface area exposed to the fire.
