South African Easter wouldn't be the same without marshmallow Easter eggs – a firm favourite for decades. These treats typically feature a soft, fluffy marshmallow centre encased in a layer of chocolate, often milk chocolate. While Beacon's iconic egg remains a long-standing favourite, many brands now offer their own versions, including Woolworths, Pick n Pay, and Checkers. Sweetie Pie from Beyers Chocolate (no relation) adds a twist with three distinct flavours: vanilla, chocolate, and caramel. The market sees exciting flavour innovations each year. Sadly, Cadbury's marshmallow egg seems to have been discontinued, with the brand possibly shifting focus to its other chocolate offerings.
But what do they taste like?
We'll be tasting some of these over the Easter weekend. In the meantime, a quick search revealed these existing online reviews:

Update: Tuesday 22 April 2025:
After trying out all those brands and variations, and more, an informal tally from family feedback revealed:
1. Woolworths Marshies have the best chocolate covering. The eggs seem smaller, and the marshmallow sweeter.
2. The Caramel Sweetie Pie eggs are very very good. The marshmallow texture leans towards an actual Sweetie Pie inside. The caramel flavour is delicious.
3. In general, the chocolate coating of the Sweetie Pie eggs seems to have a more "baking chocolate" profile.
4. The Beacon marshmallow eggs taste like everyone's childhood.
5. The Chocolate Sweetie Pie egg has a nice chocolate marshmallow inside.
6. The Woolworths Chocolate Marshies (not in the photo because those only via Ouma's Easter bunny delivery later during the weekend) was also a firm favourite.
Which do you prefer?
